A little help for forum readers, Tactics for farming snowmen:

    1. Each wilderness area has 8 spawn points (SP), know were they are for the map you choose.

    2. Select your starting point. Stand on 1 SP till a Snowman comes up. 6 minute and some change reset timers so be patient. Do not panic if you don't get the ess when snowman pops because someone beat you to it. You know it will respawn in 6 minutes.

    3. Move to the next closest spawn point. Do not use a mount, you don't want to get stuck later and the next SP resets before you get there.

    4. If Snowman is at SP 2 get it, if not move on to next SP.

    5. Repeat step 4 for each SP.

    6. When you've checked each SP go back to SP 1 and wait for respawn.

Eventually you will have several, then all SP timed to your path in sync.

Tricks: If you want to compete for the Snowmen at a certain point, two things you can do:

    1. Stand on the SP. Others won't be able to target the Snowman with their mouse because it will be on you.

    2. Put your mouse on the SP. A message at the top of the screen is the first thing to appear as they spawn. The message pops up before the sound or the graphic. You can click as soon as the message pops up.

Go forth and spread Holiday Cheer as you dominate the landscape.

Good advice. What the OP wrote is exactly how I did it last year, when I hoarded a couple thousand essences.

There are also alternatives to snowman essence farming. These are the ones I know, off the top of my head:

    • buy them (however, many players - myself included - would rather spend that andermant on other stuff)

    • farm 25 beets, run normal event map (but don't kill the bear boss), open presents for essences (may get 50-200 ess/run, depending on luck... & may be slightly less boring than snowmen, depending on your inclinations)

    • use amphorae keys, if you have them (I hoarded 50 of them during the final Sargon event, during which you could trade green light essences for a key). I used six keys, so far, in this event. Every time I used a key, I got 50 snow essences. The fifth amphora dropped the Gingerbread (shield) Barrier (not that I wanted it, but, anyway... information for you collectors out there).

    Gingerbread barrier? What's that?

Its a legendary shield, looks like a Gingerbread man.

Yeah, it's the shield. I should have just said "gingerbread shield", but I called it by the "official" name on the item :)

They could make them work like Shabby Chests, for example. That way, players wouldn't have to fight over them, or camp near the spots where they sprout out. Yes, they could then reduce their numbers in each area, but it'd be much better, I'd say.

Did the same last year... after about 4 cycles, I would usually have all the snowmen in the circuit and then all the low level people in the map would be PO'ed at me. I'm actually lucky. I got 500 before entering the event the first time and I have enough damage that I can kill both the bears (normal and difficult) in about 200-250 and on more than one occasion, I've gotten more ess back from opening the presents than I use to kill the bosses. Mean that those low level maps are safe from having to put up with me... for now.

    EDIT:
I thought I remembered posting this last year, and my "Guide" was almost identical.

I missed that one event (I can't remember which one) that you can actually trade realm fragments for an amphorae key from Thabo. I wish I could trade all my fragments for keys if I could.

And good to know about finding holiday legendary items via amphorae. Now I'll actually consider spending my well-farmed amount into keys (since I'm too lazy to bother dealing with Big Paws) and consider cracking them open.

Did they nerf the snow essense? Wasn't there some that did more percentage damage?

    Semi-off-topic, but:

I don't know what the chances are of getting a unique from the amphorae. Probably low, FYI. I've used 20 of my hoarded 50 keys, and I decided to save the other 30. Of those 20 keys used, I received 50 snow essences every time; but I only got the single Gingerbread Shield so... "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware). I did get a second Gingerbread Shield from a gold present today, so I melted the first one since it was inferior to the second one. I will probably end up melting the second one at the end of the event, too.

how do you get gold presents? I've only seen green blue and violet ones so far

They drop from hard map Bearpaws boss, although I have heard of them random dropping from mobs in hard map, I haven't seen this yet personally. They have event uniques and/or multiple purple blue green items.

A way to further improve the snowman farming technique is to cycle through instances of the chosen map. Especially on a mount, you can pick up all the snowmen on a map before the first one respawns, so changing instance helps to speed things up. Especially when you land in one which is barely populated or not at all.

Another suggestion I found useful bring a group of local enemy to the spawn point. Make the farmer kill the mobs you click on snow man unless I have just gotten lucky.

Correct, the gold presents come from Big Paws/hard-mode, primarily (but not a guarantee each time, if memory serves, sometimes it's violet from the hard boss too). I can, however, confirm the second part; I picked up one randomly dropped gold present from a mob in hard mode. (It didn't have the second gingerbread shield, though, just legendary pauldrons - though the chances for any possible thing are probably the same for a gold present regardless of the source.)

    ------------------------------------

On Topic - I ran low on snow essence, and was bored of farming event map/normal-mode, so I went to Mystra and did the old pattern :) It is kind of fun (perversely... "stealing" from those who don't know where to stand :p ) and I think it is probably, overall, the fastest way to get snow essences. This is, of course, assuming you follow the pattern and suggestions outlined in the O.P. If not, you are probably going to lose most of the drops to people who do know how to get them consistently.

I started out getting four (jumped in on someone's pattern who left, probably), then five, then seven and finally all eight... at which point my game proceeded to crash almost immediately. I still managed to get around 400-500 essences, so I'm ready for my next normal+hard solo run whenever I start the game again.

One additional nice thing you can do; when you are about finished with your farming, grab a friend and show them the route. If you really want to make a new friend, grab one of the guys that has probably been barking at you in chat for the last 15 minutes and show em how it's done.
